TROPEA, BETWEEN LANDSCAPE AND CULTURE

In the wonderful Costa degli Dei there is a precious pearl famous all over the world, a place of ancient legends and millenary history: its name is Tropea, in Calabria.

Tropea stands on a promontory between the Gulfs of Gioia and S.Eufemia and legend tells that the founder was Hercules who, returning from the Pillars of Hercules in Spain, stopped on the Costa degli Dei (also called Costa Bella) and Tropea became one of the Ports of Hercules.

THE PEARL OF TYRRHENIAN SEA

Known throughout the world for its natural and architectural beauties, Tropea towers over a vast cliff of rocks and is reflected in a crystalline sea. The ancient part of the city is located on a terrace overlooking the sea, where in front of it stands the islet (rock) with the ancient Benedictine sanctuary, the Church of Santa Maria dell’Isola, which was the refuge of hermits and sailors for centuries, since before it was not connected with the mainland.

ART AND HISTORY

The verdant hinterland with the settlements of expert farmers who cultivate the land, obtaining products known all over the world as the famous “Red Onion of Tropea”. The beaches below the cliff of Tropea are very white and contrast in a magical way with a crystal clear sea with colors ranging from turquoise to intense blue. The historic center is full of churches from various eras and evocative noble palaces which contain rich treasures and precious urban furnishings in excellent condition.
